KITCHENS
CUSTOM FIT The range wall provides both light and storage
with windows placed above upper cabinets. To increase
work space on the honed granite countertops, lower
cabinets are 30 inches deep instead of the standard
24 inches. A niche in the corner stows the mixer.
LIGH T FARE The family finds the window-lined dining nook
with a cushioned banquette useful and inviting beyond meal
times. Patty, an artist, likes to sketch and paint here, and they
all gather around the table to work on puzzles. The windows’
trim resembles moldings throughout the house.
T h e couple chose cabinets that

vintage-inspired ham m ered glass. A

s range gives C a rl,
the fam ily cook, everything he needs.
“It has six burners, two ovens, and
two broilers,” says C a rl. “It’s as
functional as a new professional
range and better-looking, but a lot
less expensive. T h is house really isn ’t
a stainless-steel kind of house.” A
dow ndraft venting system installed
behind the range takes the place of a
m odern range hood. “W e d id n ’t want
this kitchen to be like every kitchen
w e’d seen,” Patty says.
Even in the old kitchen, “people
w ould cram in,” says C a rl. T h e new
kitchen exerts the same p u ll—in a
more w elcom ing way. “W e read the
paper here, and our daughter does
her hom ew ork here,” says Patty. “It ’s
the place in the house we like to be.”
